USAA “Poppy Exhibit`` May 19 - Sept 5

USAA “Poppy Exhibit” – May 27 – Sept 5

A special version of USAA’s “Poppy Wall of Honor” will open as a temporary exhibit at the USS Midway Museum. Visitors to the special Poppy Exhibit will have the opportunity to learn more about the true meaning of Memorial Day, the poppy flower as an international symbol of remembrance, and conflicts since WWI. The seven feet by seven feet exhibit will also provide an interactive display to encourage visitors to pause and reflect on the more than 645,000 military service members who gave their lives in service to our country.

“We are honored to work with the USS Midway Museum to extend the presence of the Poppy Wall of Honor as part of the community’s Memorial Day ceremonies and events,” said David Dearie, military affairs representative for USAA in San Diego. “Our commitment to helping raise awareness of the true meaning of Memorial Day remains strong, and we hope visitors will appreciate the additional opportunity to pause and remember all those that gave their lives in service to our country.”

The larger Poppy Wall of Honor exhibit in Washington, D.C. features more than 645,000 poppy flowers, one for each American servicemember who gave their life in service to our nation since World War I. A second Poppy Exhibit will be located at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

National Moment of Remembrance May 30 at 3 pm PDT

National Moment of Remembrance – May 30 at 3 pm PDT

Established into law by Congress in 2000, the National Moment of Remembrance is when Americans pause and observe a moment of silence at 3 pm on Memorial Day to honor those who have fallen while serving in the U.S. military.

As noted by the National Moment of Remembrance Act, “Congress called on the people of the United States, in a symbolic act of unity, to observe a National Moment of Remembrance to honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.”

Join us on the flight deck to observe a moment of silence, or wherever you are, to pause and remember those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice while in uniform.

United Through Reading Story Recording May 28 10am-4pm

United Through Reading keeps military families reading ready, no matter the distance between them. We invite service members and veterans to visit the United Through Reading recording location on the flight deck of the USS Midway to video record a story for the special child in your life on May 28th, 10 am until 4 pm.

Families stay connected through story time video recordings of and books sent to military families. These stories ease the stress of time apart due to military duty, maintain positive emotional connections, and cultivate a love of reading and early childhood literacy. Since 1989, 2.7 million military members and their families have benefited from the program.
