Midway Institute for Teachers
Since 2009, the USS Midway Institute for Teachers (MIT) has provided top-rated professional development learning opportunities for middle and high school teachers of history from across the United States.
Our Mission
Professional learning for history teachers that advances understanding of the origins, conduct and consequences of global conflicts in the 20th and 21st centuries.
By developing seminars featuring renowned scholars, in addition to veterans and everyday people who have had first-hand experience living through some of these conflicts, we broaden, deepen and strengthen teacher understanding so that they, in turn, can pass that understanding along to their students.
MIT has even welcomed teachers from Canada, Mexico, Micronesia, England and more.

About MIT
The USS Midway Institute for Teachers estimates that each MIT graduating class reaches about 10,000 students per year.
The Midway Institute offers teachers three seminars: Vietnam Through Music (pilot program), World War II in the Pacific and The Cold War. Each seminar, one week in length, is held on board the USS Midway Museum - a historic aircraft carrier. Given that the USS Midway (CV41) played a critical role in the final days of the Vietnam War, derives its name from a pivotal WWII Pacific battle, and was active during the Cold War, it is an ideal location for teachers to immerse themselves in the history of these eras.
MIT seminars feature nationally known scholars that offer multiple perspectives on the events and figures that shaped these periods. People, with first-hand knowledge of the times, share personal insights. Former ship captains, soldiers, sailors and marines, pilots, and POWs, have all participated in MIT seminars.
Teachers also participate in tours of the Midway led by docents, most of whom served in the navy during the Cold War, many onboard aircraft carriers, some onboard the Midway itself!
Participating teachers receive:
- Stipends to offset travel costs
- Breakfast, lunch and afternoon refreshments
- Complimentary parking
- Books and other education resources
- Discounts to local attractions and restaurants
"I am thankful that my name will forever be associated with the USS Midway Institute. This program has the reputation of being one of the top professional developments in the country. The content shared through expert speakers, books, primary sources, and peer discussions is a game changer in the classroom. Every teacher who participates walks away with more than they walked in with. I have become a better teacher because of my experience with the USS Midway. I highly recommend that every teacher who desires to go in-depth into their content participate.” - Melanie H.
