Freedom Park at Navy Pier

The USS Midway Museum and Port of San Diego made a commitment in 2004 to one day develop a park on Navy Pier. After many years of negotiations and planning, the California Coastal Commission’s approval in February gives us the development permit required to start the process of building the park, your park – Freedom Park at Navy Pier.

Building a 10-Acre Park

Designs are currently being developed to create a park that will extend from the west end of Navy Pier, around Midway, to the Bob Hope memorial. Spanning 10 acres, it will be the largest veterans park on the West Coast and tell the story of everyday heroes who served our country and preserved our freedoms. As more details become available, we will update accordingly. Demolition of the last building on the pier is scheduled to begin in Spring 2024.

Cost Projection

The project is projected to cost $65 million.
To date, nearly $33 million has been committed to the project by the Port of San Diego ($11.7 million), the USS Midway Museum ($15 million), Congressman Scott Peters’ Office ($2 million), and $4.2 million in individual pledge support. Approximately $32+ million will need to be raised by the USS Midway Foundation and the extended Midway and San Diego philanthropic community. Major fundraising efforts get underway in Fall 2023.
