Citizenship Program

In 2015, the USS Midway Museum began a collaboration with the San Diego Community College District to expand the number of community volunteers working in the district’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and citizenship classes. Prior to the collaboration, the district had 4 community volunteers in 3 classes at their Mid-City campus. This collaboration was a result of the October 2015 article in the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper about our small group of community volunteers. Rudy Shappee a Midway Museum’s Special Projects Manager read the article and immediately set about developing a partnership between the museum and the community college district to involve Midway volunteers in this worthy cause.

By the end of the spring 2016 semester, 25 Midway volunteers assigned to 10 citizenship classes and 4 ESL classes were assisting potential citizens at 5 city campuses. Midway Volunteers are trained and placed in classrooms to tutor individually or in small groups and assist with citizenship exam preparation, job readiness skills, English communication skills, pronunciation practice and reading & writing skills.
