The C-1 Trader cargo aircraft was known as the C. O. D. (Carrier Onboard Delivery) and performed the crucial tasks of carrying passengers, priority repair parts, evacuating patients, and especially, delivering the mail. When the Midway went to jet fuel-only in the 1970s, the gasoline-powered C-1 was based ashore and trips were planned to the last gallon. The shiny patch on the left engine cowl is a mirror to allow the pilot to see if the nosegear is deployed.
