Capital Campaign Director

USS Midway Museum, San Diego, CA

We are seeking a strategic, results-driven Capital Campaign Director to lead and execute a multi-million-dollar capital campaign to complete “Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier.” This will be the largest veteran’s park on the West Coast, right next to the USS Midway Museum.  The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in fundraising, campaign strategy, and donor cultivation. This individual will work closely with museum leadership, board members, and key stakeholders to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors capable of six- and seven-figure gifts.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary – $120,000 - $160,000 year, commensurate with education/experience.

Key Success Factors:

Fundraising Goal Achieved: 

o   Raise $30 million in committed, documented gifts and pledges within the defined campaign timeline over the next two years.

Strategic Campaign Execution

o   Create and manage a detailed campaign calendar with clear benchmarks and responsibilities.

o   Collaborate with board and campaign committee members to leverage their networks and influence.

Major Gift Pipeline Development

o   Identify, qualify and manage a portfolio of major done prospects (individuals, foundations, corporations).

o   Personally close 6—7 figure gifts from high-net-worth individuals and institutions.

Internal alignment and Team Leadership

o   Coordinate across departments (e.g., development, finance, marketing, events) to ensure cohesive messaging and support.

o   Lead or support recruitment and oversight of staff, consultants, and volunteer leadership.

o    Provide timely and transparent reporting to the CEO, Board, and campaign stakeholders.

 

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop, lead, and implement the overall strategy for a successful $30 million campaign to fund the construction of ‘Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier”.
  • Identify and cultivate a pipeline of major gift prospects, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of high-net-worth donors and prospects, guiding them through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process.
  • Partner with executive leadership, board members, and volunteer leaders to engage them in the campaign effort.
  • Develop compelling campaign messaging, materials, case statements, and proposals in collaboration with communications staff and/or consultants.
  • Coordinate campaign events, site visits, and recognition opportunities.
  • Oversee campaign reporting, pledge tracking, gift acknowledgment, and donor recognition.
  • Ensure the campaign stays on timeline and within budget.

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and on-going engagement of donors for annual giving, endowment, and planned giving charitable revenue.
  • Manage and lead the Development team in achieving mutual and department-specific goals.
  • Monitor donation and donor demographic information; provide statistical analyses on current and projected revenue/trends/tactics to board and senior leaders.
  • Work closely with the Midway Foundation board of directors to raise, track, manage, and steward funds for Foundation operations, campaigns and endowments.
  • Support Foundation annual grantmaking program, including creating and processing applications, conducting grantee research, designing grant program parameters, developing grant slates, coordinating grant award contracts, and tracking follow-up reporting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of experience in major gift fundraising, development strategy, or campaign management.
  • Proven track record of leading or playing a senior role in capital campaigns of $10 million+; experience with campaigns of $25 million+ strongly preferred.

Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to close six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Strategic thinker with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with fundraising CRMs (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics).
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships through stewardship.
  • Ability to manage a major capital campaign through all phases with various constituencies.
  • Ability to represent the Museum’s programs to the public both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement an annual development plan.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, coach, delegate, and provide performance feedback to department staff.
  • Ability to lead collaborations and possess leadership skills to inspire and motivate staff, senior leadership and supporters from a wide range of backgrounds.

Working Conditions

Job Conditions/Work Location: On-site position aboard the USS Midway Museum, with work performed in a restored shipboard office environment. Weekends and evenings as needed.

Physical Requirements:  Sit for long periods of time.  Ability to climb up and down stairs and ladders; to bend, stoop, and lift standard office supplies and small office items.

Equipment Operated: Computer, facsimile, printer, scanner, telephone.
