Exhibit Technician (Full-Time)

USS Midway Museum, San Diego, CA

The USS Midway Museum seeks an experienced Exhibit Technician to join our Exhibits Team.

Job Description

The Exhibits Technician works collaboratively with other Exhibit Technicians and Volunteers to fabricate, install, and maintain museum exhibitions and restored ship spaces.

The primary focus of this position is on the daily care and upkeep of the exhibit components, ensuring they are maintained to a high level and conducting or arranging repairs when required. This work will primarily involve AV troubleshooting and repair.

Additionally, the position supports the maintenance, restoration, and renovation of historic ship spaces, which is primarily construction and fabrication work.

The candidate must be able to analyze situations, troubleshoot problems, and deliver appropriate solutions. Ideal candidates will possess a general working knowledge of multimedia equipment and accepted museum/gallery standards regarding exhibit maintenance and construction, use of tools and equipment, and the ability to research, identify, and procure parts and supplies using online computers, printed catalogs, and other sources.

Status: Regular, Full-time non-exempt,

Schedule: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Pay Range: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour. The rate of pay offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, education, and experience and take into account internal equity. The Museum is not able to offer compensation outside of this posted range.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs exhibit maintenance and repair. Where possible, effect immediate repairs and assess the need for changes in design or materials. When required, acquire parts, equipment, or external expertise to assist in effecting repairs.
  • Utilize mechanical drawings, schematics, and product manuals to repair and maintain exhibit components.
  • Construct and install museum exhibit structures and other elements using various materials, tools/equipment.
  • Maintain exhibit maintenance records according to manufacturer’s warranty requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Observe safety and risk management procedures in public areas and workspaces.
  • Maintain consumable materials, tools, and equipment inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Assist in the setup and tear-down of temporary exhibits and displays.
  • Participates in finish and detail work on exhibit environments.

Experience, Skills, & Conditions Required

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma
  • Two years of related experience are required
  • Prior experience in museum/gallery or tradeshow exhibit environment preferred

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in MS Office Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, and/or Zoom. Adobe Creative Suite is a bonus.
  • General working knowledge of audio-video equipment, with the ability to learn new skills in operating and maintaining specialized A/V systems.
  • Knowledgeable of basic carpentry techniques, hand and power tools, electrical wiring and lighting, paints and adhesives, and associated safety practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, analyze situations, and respond quickly to deliver effective solutions.
  • Ability to work with and for volunteers.
  • Ability to work cooperatively across multiple museum departments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Job Conditions/Work Location: Work is performed aboard the USS Midway in former administrative offices restored to basic working conditions.
  • Physical Requirements: Constant climbing up and downstairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull/push, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds; reach above and below shoulder height.
  • Equipment Operated: General office equipment, handheld radio, hand, and power tools.
