Aircraft Gallery

The USS Midway Museum has over 30 restored aircraft and helicopters displayed on our Hangar and Flight Decks! They span decades from the Battle of Midway in 1942 to the Korean and Vietnam Wars to today’s tactical aircraft. Carefully restored, each represents an aspect of USS Midway’s long career.

Jet Aircraft

The Midway was in the forefront of jet aviation at sea. Our collection of fighter and attack jets covers a wide range, from the Korean War’s F9F Panther, the Vietnam War’s A-4 Skyhawk, F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom, A-6 Intruder, and A-7 Corsair II, to the Cold War’s F-14 Tomcat, S-3 Viking, and F/A-18 Hornet. Specialist jets like the F9F-8P Cougar, RA-5 Vigilante, EKA-3 Skywarrior, T-2 Buckeye, and the EA-6B Prowler, display a comprehensive array of advanced carrier aircraft throughout the post-1945 era.

Propeller Aircraft

From piston-engined warplanes like the F4F Wildcat, SBD Dauntless, TBM Avenger, F4U Corsair, and A-1 Skyraider, to the turbo-prop E-2 Hawkeye, our tactical aircraft from the propeller era help bring to life the history of carrier aviation. Support aircraft like our SNJ Texan and C-1 Trader depict the utilitarian side of shipboard flying, while a restored O-1 Birddog, in South Vietnamese markings, recounts the drama of the Midway’s rescue efforts during the fall of Saigon.

Helicopters

The USS Midway Museum has the most complete collection of seaborne helicopters arranged on her flight deck. Starting with the pioneering HO3S Dragonfly, other early piston-powered designs include the HUP Retriever and the SH-34 Seabat. Our turbine-powered naval helicopters feature the SH-2 Seasprite, SH-3 Sea King, HH-46 Sea Knight, and the versatile SH-60 Seahawk of today’s Navy. Paying tribute to naval helicopters in the Vietnam War is a restored UH-1 Huey gunship.
